- How I Record
My recording setup is pretty simple, honestly. I don't overthink it anymore. When I'm ready to record, I just follow the same steps every time and it works.
I start in FL Studio and set my master output levels around -6dB to -3dB. That gives me enough breathing room so nothing clips when it hits the SSL MK2. The interface is basically the bridge between the software and the hardware—it's the most important piece of the chain.
From the SSL MK2, I run XLR cables to my preamp. The gain sits where the signal peaks around -12dB. Nothing fancy, just consistent. The NT1 mic plugs straight into the preamp input, mounted on a shock mount to keep vibrations out of the recording.
Signal comes back into the SSL MK2 on a dedicated input channel, and then FL Studio records it. That's the whole thing. DAW to interface to preamp to mic and back. Same path every session.
The key is not changing anything once you find what works. I've got my levels dialed in, my cables are solid, and I know exactly where everything sits. When I hit record, I'm not thinking about the gear—I'm just recording.
